An illness will keep Golden State Coach Steve Kerr out of Game 3 of the Warriors’ first-round playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Warriors announced Kerr’s illness in a written statement a few hours before the scheduled tipoff of Saturday night’s game in Portland.

Kerr’s top assistant, Mike Brown, would lead the team in his absence, the statement said. The team did not disclose the nature of Kerr’s illness.

The Warriors, the top seed in the Western Conference, were up two games to one in the best-of-seven series.

Kerr, 51, had two back operations after he coached the Warriors to the N.B.A. championship in 2015, and he missed the first 43 games of last season because of recurring pain resulting from the operations.
